Climate compensation

When we launched our Outdoor collection, we wanted it to be truly sustainable. In addition to choosing materials with a smaller climate footprint, we vowed to compensate for the carbon dioxide emissions caused by the production of the garments.

Globally, clothing production accounts for four to eight percent of all emissions of greenhouse gases. We need to do our part to reduce that number. Our goal is to reduce Fristads’ CO2 emissions by 50 percent by 2030 and we are working on several fronts to succeed. As an addition to all activities we do to change to a more sustainable production we have chosen to compensate for the carbon dioxide emissions caused by the production of the Outdoor collection.

CONTRIBUTION TO BIOMASS-BASED POWER PLANT IN INDIA

A portion of the revenue from the sales of the Outdoor collection in 2022 has been used to support a project in Punjab, India, that turns biomass into energy. The energy is generated by combusting organic matter like rice husks, animal waste, sawmill waste and palm oil waste and is used by textile manufacturing facilities located at the same site. The project not only avoids the use of fossil fuels, but it also provides employment to local communities and business opportunities for local stakeholders. The emissions reductions of the project are estimated at 582,210 tonnes of CO2 eq. over the crediting period of 10 years. The project is listed on the United Nations Carbon Offset Platform.

development of renewable energy

A portion of the revenue from the sales of the Outdoor collection in 2021 has been used to support a project in southern India that turns waste into energy. In the area, where chicken farming and egg production are common, the traditional open storage of bird litter causes significant environmental and sanitary problems, as well as emissions of harmful methane gases. Thanks to the project, up to 120,000 tonnes of litter and other biomass waste can instead be converted to renewable energy – each year. Additionally, up to 10,000 tonnes of organic fertiliser is produced each year. This will help small local and regional farmers implement sustainable agriculture practices.

Solar-powered water heaters in India

In 2020, Fristads prevented 339 tonnes of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere by contributing $5,000 to a program that funds solar water heaters for Indian families. India is a country that is highly dependent on electricity from fossil fuels despite being rich in solar resources. As many as 90 percent of urban residents in western India use electricity to heat water, which not only causes large emissions of carbon dioxide but also contributes to frequent power outages. India has about 300 sunny days per year, but awareness of solar energy in the country is low and many people do not trust non-electric solutions.

This is how we calculate our climate impact:

Since 2018 we have calculated our climate impact in line with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, Scope 1 and 2. Scope 1 and 2 include our energy consumption and heating of our offices and emissions from company owned cars, among other things. At the end of 2021 we reported scope 3 for the first time. Scope 3 involves emissions outside our own walls, throughout our value chain – from the materials that we purchase and energy use of our suppliers, to transportation and the disposal of the goods once they have reached the end of their life. To get the most reliable and accurate figures possible, Fristads’ climate calculations are always reviewed by an independent third-party expert. You can read more about our work to reduce our climate impact in our Sustainability Report.
